Apr 17, 2024

'Dark Feathers: Dance of the Geisha' is a dance suspense film that tells the mysterious story of Kate, a professional photographer and amateur ballroom dancer. The film was strictly selected by professional juries at multiple international film festivals and won important awards at many film festivals, including the Best Dance Film Award at the Cannes World Film Festival and the Best Asian Film Award at the Chandler International Film Festival. Several international media have carried relevant reports. The film is scheduled to be released across the board at the end of 2024, bringing a visual and spiritual enjoyment to the audience.

As the editing director for this film, Angelin Song possesses a keen appreciation for the intricate plot and character relationships. Under his guidance, the film underwent a secondary creation through various editing techniques, cleverly merging elements of dance, suspense, and thriller, while pushing the film's rhythm to a climax. Angelin Song stated that during post-production, it was essential not only to accommodate the changes in the music's rhythm but also to create the tense atmosphere characteristic of a thriller. This involved using different editing rhythms and tonal variations to reflect the development of the film's storyline. Therefore, as the editing director, Angelin Song continuously explores the suspenseful elements within the film and the subtle tensions between characters, proposing relevant post-production requirements. This allows other team members to perfectly present these emotions and tensions through post-production techniques, successfully shaping different characters while ensuring that the film’s visual effects meet expectations and maintaining the coherence and tension of the story.

Angelin Song noted that during the post-production of this film, there were also potential conflicts between editing concepts and visual requirements. To address this issue, he used the visual requirements as a basis and closely coordinated with the production team while meeting the visual-related demands of post-visual supervisor Xue Zhang. Angelin Song believes that for dance films, it is crucial to coordinate the visuals with the music's rhythm and ensure the fluidity of dance movements, while also highlighting the transmission of emotions through the story's rhythm and dynamic expressions. For thriller films, he focuses on creating a tense atmosphere, pursuing compact plot development and climaxes of tension to attract the audience and resonate with them.

As the post-visual supervisor, Zhang Xue expressed that every time Angelin Song participates in the post-production work, it reflects his passion for the process. He loves and diligently explores new editing techniques and methods. Therefore, during his role as editing director, he has provided very constructive editing suggestions, resulting in a unique visual effect for "Dark Feathers: Dance of the Geisha," which has contributed positively to the film’s acclaim. There is great anticipation for him to continue showcasing his talent and bring more exciting works to the audience in the future.
