Meet Liang Zhang - A Canvas Rebel Interview

Dec 18, 2023

We recently connected with Liang Zhang and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Liang thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?

Earning a full-time living from my creative work is both a cherished accomplishment and an ongoing journey. It’s a testament to the dedication, passion, and perseverance poured into each artistic endeavor. While the path may have had its twists and turns, the ability to sustain oneself through creative expression is deeply rewarding. It involves not only honing artistic skills but also navigating the business side of creativity, understanding market dynamics, and building a supportive network. Every project is not just a piece of art; it’s a step towards sustaining a livelihood from what I love most. The journey continues to unfold, marked by the joy of creating and the fulfillment that comes from turning creativity into a sustainable profession.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My artwork is a testament to the fusion of organisms with the meticulous grid system, delving into the profound impact these systems wield on individuals. Nature is the heartbeat of my exploration, intricately dissecting the dance between nature and humanity. Sculptures and installations are my chosen mediums, allowing me to confront the rigid regulations and innate softness of nature in our contemporary society. By juxtaposing organic forms with the grid’s rigidity, I challenge conventional perspectives, sparking dialogues on our intricate relationship with the natural world. My art seeks the delicate equilibrium between imposed order and the wild chaos of nature, transcending the physical into realms of ideas and emotions. Through immersive environments and thought-provoking installations, I beckon viewers to reflect on their connection to contrasting elements.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is witnessing the genuine connection people make with my work. When individuals pause, immerse themselves, and take the time to engage with my art, discovering a personal resonance, it’s an immensely gratifying experience. The ability to evoke emotions, spark contemplation, and forge connections through visual expression adds profound meaning to my creative journey. Knowing that my art has the power to elicit thought and emotion, creating a shared experience with those who encounter it, is the true essence of artistic fulfillment for me.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?

In hindsight, a valuable resource I wish I had tapped into earlier in my creative journey is the wealth of insights and perspectives from both fellow artists and individuals not pursuing a career in art. The exchange of ideas within the artist community brings a depth of understanding and shared experiences that can be incredibly enriching. Additionally, engaging with people outside the art world offers fresh viewpoints and diverse inspirations, fostering a more holistic approach to creativity. The collective wisdom of both artistic peers and those with different backgrounds becomes a powerful reservoir of knowledge, guidance, and inspiration, propelling the creative journey to new heights.
